Founded in 1850 and named for the Great Salt Lake, this Utah county serves as the state's most populous center and the sole first-class county in the region. As the heart of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, it is renowned for hosting the 2002 Winter Olympics and encompasses the entire Jordan River watershed north of the Traverse Mountains.
