Kansas

Named after the Kansa people, Kansas is a landlocked Midwestern state that entered the Union as a free state in 1861 following the violent conflict known as Bleeding Kansas. Known officially as the Sunflower State, it is home to the largest urban area in the state, the bi-state Kansas City metropolitan region, and features the highest point in the U.S. at Mount Sunflower.
