Established in 1992 through the merger of the Chaco Department, Alto Paraguay stands as Paraguay's least populous and most sparsely populated department, with its administrative seat located in Fuerte Olimpo. This vast region, covering over 82,000 square kilometers, serves as a critical part of the country's northern frontier.
