Autonomous Region of Bougainville

Located in Papua New Guinea, Bougainville is a geographically distinct island region that achieved autonomy in 2002 following a devastating civil war over the Panguna mine. After a decisive 2019 referendum where 98% of voters chose independence, the territory is now on a scheduled path to full sovereignty by September 2027.
