Hainan, China's southernmost province and largest island, serves as a major tourist destination and special economic zone known for its diverse ethnic groups and tropical climate. Separated from Guangdong in 1988, it encompasses the main Hainan Island along with numerous smaller islands and disputed territories in the South China Sea.
