Founded in 1788 as a British penal colony, New South Wales is Australia's most populous state and the nation's first state, with Sydney serving as its capital. The state borders Queensland, Victoria, and South Australia, while the Australian Capital Territory and Jervis Bay Territory exist as enclaves within its borders.
